*IMPORTANT PARTS* *When Celie is raped by her "dad." ~This shows why her life is complicated and why she's a little disfunctional. It also shows how her relationship is complicated with men and women as well as God. This creates a trust issue and she's not quite sure who to really trust anymore.
God Is Trying to Tell You Something - The Color Purple "You better not never tell nobody but God. It'd kill your mammy" (pg 1). This song goes with the book because Celie is threatened in the beginning that if she told anyone what had happened that it would kill her mom. In all the hard times she turns to God and this song is like her calling out to him. Although at one point in the book Celie begins to doubt God. "What God do for me?...he give me a lynched daddy, a crazy mama, a lowdown dog of a step pa and a sister i probably won't ever see again. Anyhow, i say, the God i been praying and writing to is a man." (199). This quote shows how Celie begins to not believe in God because bad stuff has been happening to her. But Shug lets Celie know that even though God may not show it he does help Celie out.
*When Celie gets married to Albert (MR_). ~Albert wanted to get married to Nettie(Celie's sister) but Nettie's dad didn't want to let Nettie go quite yet so he ended up marrying Celie instead.
*When Shug comes into Celie life. ~This is when Celie finds out that she has feelings for more then just males. This is when her "mask" is removed and she becomes more confident with herself and less of a pushover.
This is when Shug is in Celie's life. Celie changes more to better herself when she has a new female rolemodel in her life. Also this picture shows that Ceile is now happy. All the years in her life she has not been happy or in love with Mr._. But now that she has Shug in her life it's like she has a new beginning or a second chance to find her true happiness.
*When Sofia leaves and get's thrown into jail. ~This really hurts Ceile because Ceile and Sofia were like best friends and talked all the time, but now Celie is all alone and she had to find someone else to talk to. This is when Celie begins opening up to Shug. *When Celie and Shug "connect". ~Celie is finding someone she can get close to and she's discovering herself more in detail. And she finally feels what love is because the only person that ever loved her was Nettie.
*When Celie finds the letters from Nettie. ~This is when she uncovers Albert's true colors. He knew how close Nettie and Celie were and she thought that Nettie was dead. This is the overall climax of the book because it then causes Ceile to realize that Mr._ was not a nice person and she then informs Mr._ that she is leaving. *When Nettie tells Celie she found her children. ~This is an important part because Celie didn't know where her children were and to know they were safe and in a good home was such a relief for her. *When Shug and Grady decide to leave for Memphis and want to take Celie. ~Celie was never really independant until Shug came around and showed her that she doesn't have to do what a man tells her, so even though Mr._ demands Celie not to go, she tells him that she can do whatever she wants. "Celie is coming to Memphis with me...Over my dead body....Its time to leave you and enter into the Creation. And you dead body just the welcome mat i need." (206-207). This quote shows how ready Celie was to leave and start fresh. Also this is like the turning point of the book, because before Ceile was a pushover and did whatever Mr._ said. And she jumped when he said jump. But now she has learned and gained the confidence to stand up for herself and what she believes in.
This video shows the part when Shug tells Mr._ shes leaving and Celie's going with her. This is a great video that sets the mood of the book or the general attitude of the book, which is shock. Everyone is shocked by Ceile's behaivor because she usually does not act this way and talk back. But this is the new Ceile! *Celie starting her own clothing line. ~This is important because Celie is finally staring a new life and shes even making her own money doing something she loves to do, making pants. She's becoming independant.
